Last week you probably didn't know who Tomas Hertl was. Now Hertl has been proclaimed a teen hockey sensation social media star wunderkind who may have scored the goal of the year.
In only three NHL games, Hertl has scored six goals which included a four goal game against the New York Rangers. He currently leads the NHL in goals and points. Hertl is the youngest player to score four goals in one game since Jimmy Carson in 1988.
So what does this mean for your fantasy hockey team?
Judging by Hertl's 63% owned (and climbing) rating on Yahoo! Fantasy many fantasy owners are believing the hype. To put this in context, Hertl is owned more in Yahoo! Fantasy leagues than veterans Jordan Staal, Scott Hartnell, and Kyle Turris.
While Hertl is clearly a talented player with a bright future, I will not be adding him to my fantasy lineup.
With six goals in 13 shots Hertl's shooting percentage is around 46%. To put that into context, in the last full season 2011-2012 Mathieu Perreault finished with the highest shooting percentage in the league at around 27%. In his four goal game Hertl got just over 11 minutes of ice team.
Essentially, this scoring streak is not sustainable and Hertl is the beneficiary of some good luck.
If your league is deep you may want to pick him up, but expect a slump at some point as he regresses to the the mean. If you are in a keeper league and Hertl is available you may want to add him to your team as there is clearly a lot of potential here.
I end this piece by saying "Teenage mutant ninja Hertl" as it seems every written piece on Tomas Hertle must.
